Challenge

The Camden GP website is a reference tool for GPs to use for referrals while patients are in the room. The old site had been built in an ad hoc manner and was slowing down consultations. The challenge was to redesign the site with speed and ease of use in mind; rebuilding the taxonomy to avoid frustration.

Method

I lead the research and IA process alongside Shed Collective, working closely with stakeholders to produce a revised taxonomy of clinical topics, grouped into clinical categories, through focus groups and card sorting workshops. This was then validated through user testing with healthcare professionals.

One main challenge was to fit the depth of content into a simple user interface. I worked with the visual designers at Shed to ensure a clean interface, that was fit for purpose, was produced. Shed also included some coding wizardry with smart search functionality that combined fuzzy logic, weighted keywords and user browsing history all built on top of the taxonomy that was produced in the research phase of the project.

Impact

The client was so happy with the site they entered it into the UX UK awards where it was shortlisted and won the best public sector award - an amazing achievement for all involved. The site is also now being resold to other clinical commissioning groups throughout the UK.
